The City
Rome is now one of the world's most important tourist destinations. Due to the incalculable immensity of its archaeological and art riches, as well as the elegance of its unique customs, the beauty of its panoramic views, and the majesty of its majestic "villas,"
After Paris, Rome is the second most visited city in the EU, with an average of 7–10 million visitors per year, which can double during holy years. According to a new survey, the Colosseum (4 million tourists) and the Vatican Museums (4.2 million tourists) are the 39th and 37th most visited places in the world, respectively.
In 2005, the city received 19.5 million foreign visitors, a 22.1 percent improvement over 2001. In 2006, 6.03 million foreign tourists visited Rome, putting it in the eighth position among the world's 150 most visited cities.
Over the past two centuries, Rome has been one of the world's most visited cities. Rome was the most powerful city in Western Civilization during the Roman period, controlling the Mediterranean, Northern Africa, England, and parts of the Middle East. Since the pope, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, lived and still lives in Rome, it became one of the most important cities in Christianity.
